Saba

Saba
ImageNamed the Unspoiled Queen, Saba is an eco paradise and quite the getaway for avid divers, hikers and nature enthusiasts. She is as beautiful on top as she is underneath. Edge ferries provide a regular schedule year round – Wed through to Sun each week. The journey is 75-90 minutes, and docks in Fort Bay, the only proper access to the sea on Saba. Saba is sheer cliffs on all sides, and even the old slave path still remains where goods were offloaded for transport to the villages by donkey.

ImageFort Bay is home to Saba Deep Dive Shop, Pop's Place Snack Bar, and the Hyperbaric Chamber. Taxis meet the passengers at the boat and tour up into the island. First stop is a village called the The Bottom, on up to Windwardside, where the trails start for hiking and tours continue over through Hells Gate with a look down to the airport, precariously balanced out on a lava overflow. Taxi tours are the only way to get up and into the island as the walk up from Fort Bay to The Bottom is vertical and strenuous. The views are spectacular. Drivers will stop at places of interest to take photos, and will let hikers out at the trail with arrangements to meet them for the return journey to Fort Bay.

The hiking in Saba's rainforest is not to be missed with the main trail, Mt Scenery, being the most popular. It is possible to stop at any point and return to Windwardside, or challenge the climb for the views from the top. ImageThe Saba Trail Shop asks a $3 donation for the trail upkeep, and guests receive a trail badge. Windwardside boasts great little restaurants for lunch: Scout's Place, Tropics Cafe, Brigadoon and many more. There are a few shops selling local crafts such as the local Saba lace, Saba Spice Liqueur, hand blown glass jewelry, and artwork. The villages are quaint with low built cottages all whitewashed with red and green roofs, tiny narrow roads and very friendly locals.

Edge offers a convenient lunch and tour package for guests. $30 pp includes the taxi tour, time for hiking and lunch at Scout's Place. Great for first time visitors and those looking for a way to spend time while their spouses dive. Saba is a daytrip with diving and packages for couples and families with different interests.

Watch movieScuba Diving in Saba is world renowned. Many divers will ensure that a day trip to Saba is part of their dive vacation plan. All dive shops offer the highest standards of service and professionalism, and meet the divers as the ferry arrives. If a double dive is booked, then the day is spent at Fort Bay with the dive shop and diving. If a single dive in the afternoon is chosen, there is time in the morning to take a taxi and sightsee Saba, with the arrangement to return to Fort Bay at 12.30 pm. Certification cards are required for all divers. Novice divers are encouraged to dive a few dives in St Maarten before venturing over to Saba, as the wall and pinnacle diving can be considerably deeper. We book Saba Deep, Sea Saba and Saba Divers Most dive sites are very close and require little travel time on the dive boats. Sandwiches for lunch can be purchased in advance from the dive shops for the double dives, or guests can take food along. Dive Shops will provide all gear or divers can bring their own along. $55 single dive and $100 - $110 for a double dive.

Saba is very unspoiled and a refreshing change from the cosmopolitan hustle and bustle that St Maarten and St Barts provide.
